Brigandage in Maremma<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The nineteenth century, for the Maremma, perhaps represents the darkest period of its history.
It is during this century, in fact, that the phenomenon of brigandage comes to life. It was the practice in those times that the criminals went into hiding. Impenetrable and full of numerous ravines and caves, the Maremma Mediterranean maquis provided a dense network of ideal hiding places for anyone who wanted to escape the forces of order.
Thus it was, in fact, that for an entire century, numerous brigands were able to perpetrate robberies, extortion and murders with impunity. Some even instituted a sort of taxation for the landowners and landowners of the time whose proceeds, in small part, were used to provide food to the poorest populations who in exchange ensured protection and cover for the bandits.
The best known bandits of the time were Fumetta, Bustrenga, Marintacca, Biscarini, Pastorini, Basilietto, Biagini, Bettinelli, Fioravanti and Tiburzi.
The most famous of all, however, was undoubtedly Domenico Tiburzi who from 1872 to 1896 imposed his law in the territories of lower Tuscany and upper Lazio. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThese are certainly the most beautiful towns on the Maremma hills. Sovana, a former papal residence, is considered the pearl of the Maremma. Once you enter the historic center you find yourself in the Middle Ages. Antique and leather binding shops give visitors the opportunity to purchase unique and precious items. To visit the church and the Ildebranda Tomb. Saturnia, a famous spa resort, is a must for anyone who cares about their well-being. We recommend a night bath in the highest thermal waterfalls in Europe. Sorano, a small medieval village, hosts the Orsini Fortress where expert guides will accompany you on a fascinating underground journey. Pitigliano, certainly the most beautiful town in the entire Maremma, hosts the Synagogue and Palazzo Orsini.
